AWO International Partners Sahamati and SPACE celebrate International Women’s Day


The 8th of March was the day. As in previous years, to celebrate International Women’s Day, AWO International’s partner Sahamati supported and organised a couple of events in the project area of the joint Rural Youth Development Programme. Several hundred young women (as well as men) from 4 VDCs of Nepal’s Nawalparasi District, cooperative members and the project team came together at the project supported community buildings and put forward their demand for women’s rights.

 

Almost 250 women from Ratanpur and Gaidakot VDCs met in Damar, where - in the presence of VDC officials - 8 women groups took part in a folk-song competition organized by the Mahila Milan-Cooperative. In their songs, the women called for equal rights for men and women and for women’s self-determination. Almost 300 women from Dandajheri and Kotthar VDCs came together in Thambasi for an event organized by the Devchuli-Cooperative where a young woman from Kotthar expressed the primary concern of the women in rural Nepal in line with the official slogan of the 101st International Women’s Day ‘Connecting Girls – Inspiring Futures’: ‘Everybody wants to see the world – give your daughters the opportunity to learn to read and write.’

 

AWO International’s partner SPACE also contributed to the celebrations on the occasion of International Women’s Day. In all 5 VDCs of the ‘Community Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihood Programme’  (targeting the freed Kamiyas of Bardiya-District) various events took place. The project supported VDC-level community organisation networks organised women’s rights rallies and speech programmes in Bardiya District’s Dhadawar, Kalika, Dheudakala, Sorahaw and Motipur VDCs. The speeches focused on various issues such as the current situation of women’s rights or violence against women. Several hundred women, mainly freed Kamiyas, took part in these events. In addition, SPACE, along with representatives of government agencies, party representatives and other NGOs also participated in the events in the District Head Quarter in Gulariya.
