Onion cultivation boost by women farmers gets recognition and support from the Government in Malkangiri, Odisha

Thirty members of Sitapada vegetable growers’ cooperative  from villages of  of Chitarkonda Block in Malkangiri district  had undertaken onion cultivation in organic way by getting seed support from Department of Tribal welfare Government  of Odisha India. These cooperatives are provided handholding and technical support by community resource persons appointed under the project implemented by AWO International’s long-term partner Madhyam Foundation. The project has been supported by AWO international to build and strengthen social structures in the communities. Compared to previous years the farmers were able to increase their yield significantly. The Government of Odhisa acknowledges the nine-year cooperation between Madayam Foundation and AWO International and has agreed to cover the cost for storage facilities.  Also further incentives were given to the cooperative. Cooperative members have stated that since the beginning of the intervention in 2010 their household income has steadily been increased as well as the nutrition diversity itself, which has a positive effect on the members’ health and well-being.

Madhyam Foundation and AWO International will continue the support for women vegetable growers until 2021. The project is supported by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
