Regional Office South Asia and partners celebrate Women's Day

On the occasion of International Women's Day, 8th of March, AWO International's Regional office remained closed and various events took place all over the region to mark the relevance of Gender Equality in South Asia

In India, Bangladesh and Nepal many women and girls phase unequal opportunities in context of education, health, nutrition and employment. Not seldom relevant financial empowerment of women comes together with an increase of work load for women because equal share of work (especially in context of household and child care) is not taking place.

Even in the year 2013 many women and girls are confronted with discriminatory practices as dowry or early marriage and often face gender based violence.

On 8th of March many partners of AWO International celebrated the International Women’s day by conducting various events. In Nepal the partner organizations SAHAMATI and SPACE conducted rallies and speech programs with women rights activists in context of gender equality and domestic violence.

In Bardya district SPACE distributed sensitization materials and hold an interaction program with media and local stakeholders - including the Local Development Officer (LDO) and the Chief District Officer (CDO) - in the district headquarter of Gularya. All together 1200 people participated in the two days women day celebrations that also included blood donations.

In Nawalparasi district SAHAMATI organized a huge event with 600 participants; members of many supported local structures (cooperative, youth clubs, local NGOs, saving & credit groups and 15 women groups) came together from two VDCs. A song contest with songs about women rights and gender equality took place. On 8th of March it was also announced that the "Karmanath Saving & Credit Cooperative" that was buildt up by the cooperation project reached a coverage of 100% of all house holds of Dandajheri VDC. The cooperative is the first to reach this result in the countries Lumbini zone.

AWO International has outlined Gender Equality as a cross cutting issue to be considered in all supported projects throughout South Asia.
