WARBE and POURAKHI celebrate Migrants Day and lobby for Migrant Rights at the United Nations UN HLD in New York

Rallies, exhibitions and various interaction programs took place on 18th December, on the occasion of the “International Day of Solidarity with Migrant Workers”. Representatives of WARBE and POURAKHI represented migrants from Bangladesh and Nepal in the High Level Dialogue on Migration (UN HLD), organized from 3rd till 4th October in New York. The UN HLD is a highly influential body; after 7 years civil society representatives and high level government officials from sending and destination countries came together. The UN HLD lobbies for an inclusion of the migration issue in the “Post MDGs” that will replace the UN Millennium Development Goals soon.

The 18th December as “International Migrant’s Day” was proclaimed on 4th December 2000 to recognize the contributions made by millions of migrants to their economies and the wellbeing of their host and home countries, and to promote respect for their basic human rights. This date was chosen because it was on 18th December 1990 that the United Nations adopted the “International Convention on Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Member of their Families”.
